The honest cost sheet
Dogs cost money every single month, not just at adoption. Add these up for YOUR area before deciding โ underestimating cost is a top-3 reason dogs are surrendered.

The honest time budget
- Puppy first 4 months: 2โ4 hours/day (feeds, toilet breaks every 2โ3 h, training, socialization trips)
- Adult dog baseline: 60โ120 min/day of walks, play and training depending on breed โ check our breed pages for exact numbers
- Grooming: 15 min/week (short coat) to 30 min/day (long double coats)
- Who does each of these in your household, by name? If no one can answer, you're not ready yet
Get the whole household on paper
- Allergies in the family? Spend time with the breed before committing (Poodles and Yorkies shed least)
- Landlord approval in writing, including size/breed limits
- House rules agreed BEFORE arrival: furniture? bedroom? who cleans poop?
- Existing pets: plan separated introductions for the first weeks
- Vacation plan: who cares for the dog, at what cost
Breeder, shelter, or rehome โ what to check
- Reputable breeder: meets the mother, health testing of parents (hips, eyes, heart for the breed), no puppies before 8 weeks, asks YOU questions
- Shelter/rescue: ask for behavior notes and any medical history; adult dogs show their true temperament โ often the safer bet for first-time owners
- Red flags anywhere: puppies always available, multiple litters, no mother visible, meeting in a parking lot, sale before 8 weeks
Starter supplies checklist
- Crate or confinement pen (sized for adult), bed, food and water bowls
- The food the dog is CURRENTLY eating โ switch foods gradually over 7โ10 days
- Flat collar with ID tag + harness + 2 m leash (never retractable for training)
- Chews and puzzle toys; puppy-safe teething items
- Enzymatic cleaner (toilet accidents), baby gates, poop bags
- Brush suited to the coat type (see our shedding guide), nail clippers, dog toothpaste
- Find your veterinarian BEFORE the dog arrives โ first puppy visit should be within days
