under ~12 kg (26 lb). Apartment-friendly, cheaper to feed, and the longest lifespans in the dog world (12โ16+ years). The trade-offs: many small breeds are barkier, harder to house-train, and fragile around rough toddlers.

12โ25 kg (26โ55 lb). The sweet spot for many families: big enough for hikes and play, small enough for a car back seat and a modest food bill. Energy levels vary widely in this band โ check the exercise line on each profile.
over 25 kg (55 lb). Gentle giants with shorter lifespans (typically 8โ12 years) and real costs: more food, bigger vet bills, and joint health to protect from puppyhood. Most large breeds here are famously good-natured โ but they need training early, while you can still physically manage them.
