Temperament & behavior
Friendly (poor guard dogs โ they love everyone), dramatic, vocal (the famous 'talking'), tireless. High prey drive toward small animals. Escape skills: digging, climbing, door-opening, leash-slipping.
Likes, dislikes & how they play
๐ What they love
- Running โ far, fast, always
- Cold weather
- Dog company (sled-pack instinct)
- Howling and talking back
๐ซ What they hate
- Heat
- Being confined
- Recall practice
- Small pets that run
Running is the game: bike-joring, canicross, long pulls. Fenced yard required โ and Huskies test fences like engineers. Cats and rabbits live dangerously nearby.
Shedding & grooming
Shedding: Extreme. Twice a year the undercoat comes out in handfuls that could stuff a mattress. Daily brushing in blow season; furminator-level tools earn their price.
Brush 2โ3ร weekly normally, daily in season; never shave the double coat; bath rarely (self-cleaning coat).
Aggression tendencies โ the honest read
| Toward | Tendency |
|---|---|
| Strangers | Very low โ famously friendly to everyone |
| Other dogs | Generally good; same-sex friction possible |
Not aggressive toward humans; the risk profile is escape + prey drive, not bites.
Exercise needs
90โ120 per day per day. This is the breed most likely to be rehomed for under-exercise. Honest self-assessment required before choosing one.
Good withโฆ?
- Kids: Good (boisterous)
- Other pets: Risky with small animals
- First-time owners: No โ unless you are a runner in a cool climate with a tall fence
Health risks to know upfront
- Eye issues (cataracts, PRA, corneal dystrophy)
- Zinc-responsive dermatosis
- Hypothyroidism
- Heat intolerance
Is this breed right for you?
Serious runners/hikers in cool climates who want a partner, not a pet.
Before choosing, read the complete pre-dog checklist โ most mismatches are preventable with one honest evening of planning.
