Temperament & behavior
Happy, curious, sociable. Pack hounds that hate solitude; a lonely Beagle sings (the famous bay) and remodels the garden. Recall is a lifetime project โ a scent will override your voice.
Likes, dislikes & how they play
๐ What they love
- Following smells wherever they lead
- Food and food-adjacent objects
- Dog company
- Howling duets
๐ซ What they hate
- Being alone
- Coming when called if a smell intervenes
- Closed doors
Scent games are the jackpot: snuffle mats, hiding treats around the house, 'find it' in the grass. Secure fencing is non-negotiable โ an open gate and an interesting smell is a gone Beagle.
Shedding & grooming
Shedding: Moderate-High. Short dense hound coat sheds steadily year-round. Weekly brush, more in spring.
Low: brush weekly, bath when hound-y, clean the long ears weekly (infection-prone), watch weight โ they lie about how much they eat.
Aggression tendencies โ the honest read
| Toward | Tendency |
|---|---|
| Strangers | Very low โ greets everyone as a friend |
| Other dogs | Low; pack instinct makes them dog-social |
Among the least aggressive breeds. Their 'bad behavior' is escape artistry and food theft, not aggression.
Exercise needs
60+ per day per day. Long on-leash sniff-walks beat sprinting. The sniffing IS the exercise for a hound brain.
