How the calculator works
Different chocolates carry very different amounts of theobromine โ the compound dogs cannot clear efficiently. We use the per-gram values below, compute mg of theobromine รท body weight in kg, and compare against published risk thresholds.
| Chocolate type | Theobromine (mg per gram) |
|---|---|
| Dry cocoa powder | 28.5 |
| Unsweetened (baker's) chocolate | 15.5 |
| Semisweet / dark chocolate | 5.4 |
| Milk chocolate | 2.3 |
| White chocolate | 0.04 |
Risk thresholds used
| Dose (mg/kg body weight) | What veterinary references describe |
|---|---|
| Below 20 | Usually only mild stomach upset, if anything |
| 20 โ 40 | Mild to moderate signs: vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, thirst |
| 40 โ 60 | Potentially serious โ rapid heart rate, tremors; call your vet now |
| 60 and above | Severe โ seizures possible; treat as an emergency |
Thresholds compiled from the Merck Veterinary Manual chocolate toxicity table and AKC expert-advice nutrition pages. Verified Oct 17, 2026.
My dog ate chocolate โ what do I do right now?

- Call with the numbers. Your vet or ASPCA APCC (888) 426-4435 โ give weight, type, amount, and time.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a professional tells you to.
- Early treatment works best. Don't wait for symptoms โ they can take 2โ12 hours to appear.
