Temperament & behavior
Confident, alert, watchful. Bonds hard with its people and is naturally suspicious of strangers. Needs a job; an idle, under-socialized GSD invents stressful jobs like perimeter-patrolling the fence and 'guarding' the mail carrier.
Likes, dislikes & how they play
๐ What they love
- Structured work and training
- Scenting and tracking games
- Routine and predictability
- Being close to their person
๐ซ What they hate
- Rough or chaotic handling
- Strangers looming over them
- Long hours idle and alone
Prefers purposeful play: fetch with obedience woven in, nose-work, agility, protection-sports outlets. Keep games structured โ it feeds their need to work with you.
Shedding & grooming
Shedding: Very high. The nickname 'German Shedder' is earned. Heavy year-round shedding; twice-yearly coat blow is dramatic. Brush every other day.
Undercoat rake weekly (daily in shedding season); bath sparingly; nails and ears monthly.
Aggression tendencies โ the honest read
| Toward | Tendency |
|---|---|
| Strangers | Guarded โ wariness by design; must be socialized extensively |
| Other dogs | Variable; same-sex aggression possible |
Protection drive is real. With socialization + obedience this is manageable; without it, reactivity and fear-biting risk rise sharply. Not recommended as a first dog unless you commit to training.
Exercise needs
90+ per day per day. Physical + mental. A GSD walked 20 minutes a day is a problem being stored for later.
