Lakeland Terrier — a friendly, confident and bold companion from England. "A bold, zesty "big dog in a small package," the Lakeland Terrier, named for the Lake District of his native England, was once a farmer's dog bred to work in packs on sheep-stealing foxes." — AKC breed profile. It is a terrier — developed to hunt vermin, which gave it grit and a big-dog attitude. It currently ranks #156 in AKC registrations. Recent trend: #153 (2023) → #156 (2024) → #157 (2025).

AKC temperament summary: friendly / confident / bold. Adaptability 4/5, affection with family 5/5, openness to strangers 3/5, barking 3/5 (moderate — announces visitors, then settles), watchdog/protective nature 3/5.

Likes, dislikes & how they play

💙 What they love

  • Interactive games — fetch, tug, chase
  • Being in the middle of family life
  • Puzzle toys, scent games, training challenges

🚫 What they hate

  • Long days home alone
  • Being bored without a job to do
  • Rough, chaotic handling
  • Missed walks and skipped routines

Games with rules suit this breed best: fetch, tug, and chase, ideally woven into training. Add puzzle feeders and scent games for the brain — a mentally tired dog is a well-behaved dog.

Shedding & grooming

Shedding: Low-Moderate. Shedding 2/5, coat-grooming frequency 2/5, coat length varies. Light shedder — most hair stays on the dog.

Easy-care coat: brush once or twice a week, bathe occasionally, nails monthly.

Aggression tendencies — the honest read

TowardTendency
StrangersPolite once introduced — may be aloof at first
Other dogsUsually fine with other dogs (supervised intros)

No meaningful guard-dog tendency; individual socialization and training still shape adult behavior.

Exercise needs

45–60 per day per day. Energy level 3/5, mental-stimulation needs 4/5. Physical walks alone will not tire this dog — add brain work.
