Temperament & behavior
Curious, stubborn, spunky, alert to the point of alarm-barking. Bond tightly to one person. Terrier-level independence inside a hound's frame: they hear you; they're considering it.
Likes, dislikes & how they play
๐ What they love
- Digging (blankets included)
- Burrowing under covers
- Squeaky toys and shaking them
- Following their nose
๐ซ What they hate
- Being picked up wrong (and randomly)
- Rain
- Cold weather
- Being told no
Digging boxes, shake-and-kill squeaky toys, short scent hunts. NO jumping on/off furniture and no stairs where avoidable โ every jump is spinal risk (IVDD). Use ramps.
Shedding & grooming
Shedding: Moderate (smooth) / High (long-haired). Smooth-coat sheds more than expected; wire and long coats need more brushing.
Smooth: weekly wipe-down. Long/wire: brush 2โ3ร weekly. Keep them lean โ every extra kilo hangs off that spine.
Aggression tendencies โ the honest read
| Toward | Tendency |
|---|---|
| Strangers | Wary; alarm barkers |
| Other dogs | Can be scrappy; small-dog syndrome is real here |
Studies have ranked Dachshunds among the more bite-prone breeds toward strangers and other dogs โ mostly fear/frustration-based nipping. Socialization and gentle handling matter disproportionately.
Exercise needs
40โ60 per day per day. Two moderate walks; no high-impact jumping. Swimming is excellent spinal-safe exercise.
