What's normal, by coat type
| Coat | Examples | Normal shedding | Brushing routine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double coat (short) | Labs, German Shepherds, Huskies, Corgis | Heavy year-round; dramatic 2ร/year 'coat blow' (weeks of clouds) | 2โ7ร per week; undercoat rake; daily during blow |
| Double coat (long) | Golden Retrievers, Pomeranians | Heavy | 2โ4ร weekly + line-brushing to prevent mats |
| Short single coat | French Bulldogs, Beagles | Moderate, steady | Weekly rubber curry brush |
| Curly/hair coat | Poodles | Minimal โ hair sheds into itself, needs clipping out | Brush every 1โ2 days + pro clip 4โ6 weeks |
| Silk/wire coat | Yorkies, Terriers | Minimal | Daily brushing if long, or regular trims |
Seasonal coat blow: the two worst weeks, twice a year
Spring and fall, double-coated breeds swap their undercoat. You cannot stop it; you can only direct the traffic. Daily 10-minute brushing outside (an undercoat rake or high-velocity dryer if you're serious), more frequent baths with forced-air drying, and a lint-roller subscription. Never shave a double coat โ it can grow back patchy and destroys the insulation AND sun protection the coat provides.
When shedding is a health problem โ abnormal signs
- Bald patches, or hair that pulls out in clumps leaving thin/sore skin
- Symmetrical hair loss on both flanks or tail (hormonal โ thyroid, Cushing's)
- Excessive scratching, licking, red skin, scabs, or a 'musty' smell (infection/allergy)
- Sudden coat dullness + weight change + lethargy together (systemic illness)
- Localized chewing at one spot (pain, fleas, hotspot) โ hotspots can crater in hours; vet same day
- Post-pregnancy or post-nursing coat dump: hormonal and usually self-resolving
The routine that actually reduces house-fur
- Brushing removes the hair BEFORE the sofa does โ frequency beats tool brand
- Bathe every 6โ8 weeks with dog shampoo (over-bathing dries skin and increases shed)
- Omega-3 (fish oil) has decent evidence for coat quality โ ask your vet for dosing
- Fleas cause monumental shedding/itching: keep prevention current
- Feed a complete diet; coat is a nutrition report card
