Vaccinations: start at 2–3 months
Maternal antibodies interfere with early vaccines, which is why kitten series begin at 2–3 months old and repeat on a regular schedule (Merck). Core vaccines (the FVRCP panel and rabies) follow the American Association of Feline Practitioners and Feline Veterinary Medical Association guidelines — your vet sequences them by age and lifestyle.
Feeding by stage
| Age | Food | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4 weeks | Mother's milk or kitten milk replacer | Never cow's milk — it causes diarrhea |
| 4–8 weeks | Wet kitten food, gruel texture | Weaning window; small frequent meals |
| 2–6 months | Kitten-formulated food, 3–4 meals/day | Kittens need extra calories, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals for rapid growth (Merck) |
| 6–12 months | Transition toward adult portions | Watch body condition, not just the bowl |
The socialization window
Roughly 2–9 weeks of age is when kittens learn what is "normal and safe": handling, carriers, nail trims, different people, calm car rides. Gentle exposure now prevents a lifetime of fear-based behavior problems.
Litter box from day one
Most kittens instinctively use a litter box if it is easy to reach and easy to climb into. Scoop daily — a dirty box is the number-one driver of house-soiling problems later (Merck litter box guidance).
