🦜 Alexandrine Parakeet — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The giant cousin of the ringneck with a thunderous beak and a long, sweeping tail.

Alexandrine parakeets are large parakeets about 22-24 inches (56-62 cm) long including a very long tail, weighing 230-340 g, living 25-30 years in captivity. They are kept for their impressive size, talking ability, and striking looks.

Their powerful beaks chew through wood and weak cages fast, and they can be noisy and nippy. They need generous space and a committed owner who understands the 25-30 year, large-bird commitment.

How long do Alexandrine Parakeets live?

Alexandrines commonly live 25-30 years in captivity with good care.

What do Alexandrine Parakeets eat?

Feed roughly 60-70% pellets with vegetables, a little fruit, and a modest amount of seed and nuts as treats. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Limit fatty seeds to prevent obesity.

Alexandrine Parakeet cage and daily life

Because of the long tail, use a large cage at least 36 x 30 x 48 inches (90 x 75 x 120 cm) with sturdy 3/4-1 inch welded bars, plus 2-3 hours out of the cage. Provide hardwood chew toys; they destroy soft cages. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal) and cover for 10-12 hours of sleep.

Common mistakes with Alexandrine Parakeets

Common errors are a cage too small or too weak for the beak (escape and injury), seed-heavy diets causing fatty liver, and nonstick-fume or toxic-food exposure. Underestimating the noise and 25-30 year commitment drives rehoming.
