🐸 Amazon Milk Frog — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The big, banded 'blue milk frog' — robust, vocal, and one of the hardier tree frogs.

Amazon milk frogs (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) are 2.5-4 inch (6-10 cm) stout, gray-with-dark-bands tree frogs from the Amazon, named for the milky skin secretion they produce when stressed. They are relatively hardy, active, and vocal display frogs.

The honest note: like all amphibians their skin is sensitive (handle only when necessary with wet, clean hands) and they need dechlorinated water and good humidity. Males call loudly at night.

How long do Amazon Milk Frogs live?

Amazon milk frogs live 8-12 years in captivity and reach 2.5-4 inches (6-10 cm), with females slightly larger; adults weigh 40-80 grams.

What do Amazon Milk Frogs eat?

They are insectivores: crickets, roaches, moths, and worms, gut-loaded and dusted with calcium most feedings and a D3 multivitamin weekly. Feed adults every 2-3 days and juveniles daily; prey no wider than the mouth. No vegetation or wild-caught insects.

Amazon Milk Frog enclosure setup

A tall terrarium (20-30 gallons, 18x18x24 inches / 45x45x60 cm) with branches, plants, and a shallow water dish suits a small group. Keep 75-82°F (24-28°C); nights drop to 68-72°F (20-22°C). Humidity 70-90% with daily misting and good ventilation. A low UVB (5% T5 or LED) is beneficial. Secure lid required.

Common mistakes with Amazon Milk Frogs

Common errors: humidity too low (dehydration, sheds), handling (skin secretions and sensitivity), poor ventilation with moisture (mold), and too much light/UVB (stress).
