🐟 Banggai Cardinalfish — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The tuxedo-spotted cardinal that mouth-broods its young — and needs your ethical buy.

Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) are about 3 inches (8 cm), silver-white with bold black bars and white-spotted fins — unmistakable and peaceful. They are famous for mouthbrooding: the male carries the eggs and fry in his mouth. They are also CITES-listed and endangered in the wild.

Because wild populations crashed from overcollection, only buy captive-bred specimens, and ideally in a small group. They are a great, calm reef fish but should never come from unsustainable wild capture.

How long do Banggai Cardinalfish live?

Banggai Cardinalfish live about 3-5 years with good care. Captive-bred, well-fed fish are the responsible and hardier choice.

What do Banggai Cardinalfish eat?

They take frozen/live foods like mysis and brine shrimp, and many learn to eat pellets. The mistake is only fast-moving foods; they are slower feeders, so target-feed so they get enough.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank suits a small group. Target 75-82°F (24-28°C), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, ammonia/nitrite zero, nitrate under ~20 ppm. Provide seagrass or rock cover; keep them in a small group or pair.

Common mistakes with Banggai Cardinalfish

Key errors: buying wild-caught (endangered — choose captive-bred); fast tank mates outcompeting slow feeders; too-small group causing stress; and poor marine water quality.
