🦜 Caique — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 2 varieties mapped

The gymnast of the parrot world: tiny, fearless, and incapable of sitting still.

Caiques are compact parrots about 9-10 inches (23-25 cm) long and 150-170 g, with captive lifespans of 25-40 years. They are kept for their playful, athletic, comedic personality and relative toughness compared with larger parrots.

Caiques are not cuddly lap birds; they are high-energy, can be nippy when overstimulated, and demand several hours of interactive play and out-of-cage time each day. A bored caique chews furniture and screams, so this bird suits an engaged owner, not a hands-off one.

How long do Caiques live?

Caiques typically live 25-40 years in captivity with good diet and veterinary care, a multi-decade commitment that should be weighed before purchase.

What do Caiques eat?

Feed roughly 60-70% pelleted parrot food with the remainder vegetables, a little fruit, and occasional cooked grains or a few seeds as treats. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Caiques are active and prone to weight gain if overfed fatty seeds, so keep treats to under 10% of intake.

Caique cage and daily life

A minimum cage of about 24 x 24 x 36 inches (60 x 60 x 90 cm) with bar spacing around 5/8-3/4 inch works for one bird, but caiques need far more out-of-cage exercise than most parrots their size. Provide climbing ropes, chew toys, and at least 3-4 hours of supervised play daily. Keep the cage away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal) and cover it for 10-12 hours of sleep.

Common mistakes with Caiques

Top mistakes are underestimating their exercise needs (leading to screaming and destructive chewing), treating them like a cuddly bird and getting bitten when overstimulated, and exposing them to nonstick fumes or toxic foods. Seed-heavy diets and skipped out-of-cage time are the routine health and behavior killers.
