🦆 Call Duck — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The tiny duck with a voice that carries for miles, once used to 'call' wild ducks in.

Call ducks are miniature domestic ducks about 14-16 inches (36-41 cm) long and 1-2 lb (0.5-0.9 kg), living 7-10 years. They are kept as ornamental pets and show birds for their small size and many color varieties.

Their defining trait is a very loud, frequent quack, originally bred to lure wild ducks; this makes them poor pets for close neighbors. They are personable and hardy but need water and predator-safe housing.

How long do Call Ducks live?

Call ducks commonly live 7-10 years with good care and protection from predators.

What do Call Ducks eat?

Feed a waterfowl pellet (about 16% protein for maintenance, more for layers) with greens and scraps; avoid bread and never feed avocado or chocolate. They need niacin, so use proper duck feed rather than chick starter. Fresh water for drinking and bathing daily.

Call Duck housing and daily life

Provide a predator-proof coop with 4-5 sq ft per bird and a secure run or small pond. Hardware cloth and a raccoon-proof latch are essential. They need water deep enough to wash their heads. Their loud quacking means siting away from neighbors; shelter from weather extremes.

Common mistakes with Call Ducks

Top mistakes are siting them where the loud quacking angers neighbors, weak predator protection, and no bathing water. Feeding bread or chick starter lacking niacin, and nonstick-fume exposure near indoor housing, are common health errors.
