Gloster Canaries — Variety Guide
Gloster — one of the 8 canaries varieties owners look up by name.
Gloster is one of the canaries varieties people search for by name. This page covers what owners actually ask about it, then hands you the sourced canaries care guidance that applies to every variety.
Songbirds kept for centuries — males sing, and type canaries are judged on shape, not song.
Quick answer: Gloster is a variety of canaries. Everything on this page is canaries-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.
The care below is canaries-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Exotic & Laboratory Animals: Pet Birds and RSPCA — Canary advice. It applies to Gloster exactly as it applies to every other canaries variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.
Cage setup: width beats height
Canaries fly horizontally, so a wide, long cage outperforms a tall narrow one. As a working minimum give 60–75 cm (24–30 in) of length for one bird, with two or three perches of different diameters spaced so the tail clears them. Put the cage at chest height against a wall, out of kitchens (fumes from overheated nonstick cookware can kill birds) and out of direct midday sun. A daily flight window in a bird-safe room is the single biggest upgrade you can give.
Diet: seed-only is the classic mistake
An all-seed diet is the leading cause of the fatty liver disease that shortens pet canary lives. A good base is a quality canary seed mix plus daily vegetables — leaf greens, grated carrot, broccoli — and a small slice of egg food or a few pellets. Grit is not needed and can cause impaction. Cuttlebone covers calcium. Fresh water daily; wash dishes, not just top up.
