🦆 Cayuga Duck — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The beetle-black duck with a green sheen that shrugs off cold better than most.

Cayuga ducks are medium-large domestic ducks about 20-26 inches (50-66 cm) long and 6-8 lb (2.7-3.6 kg), living 8-12 years. They are kept for their striking iridescent black plumage, good meat and egg production, and cold hardiness.

They are generally calm and quiet compared with Call ducks, good as backyard birds. They need water, predator-safe housing, and proper waterfowl nutrition like all ducks.

How long do Cayuga Ducks live?

Cayuga ducks commonly live 8-12 years with good care and predator protection.

What do Cayuga Ducks eat?

Feed a waterfowl or layer pellet (16-18% protein, extra calcium for layers) with greens and scraps; avoid bread and never feed avocado or chocolate. They need niacin, so use duck feed rather than chick starter. Fresh water for drinking and bathing daily.

Cayuga Duck housing and daily life

Provide a predator-proof coop with 4-6 sq ft per bird and a secure run or pond. Hardware cloth and a raccoon-proof latch are essential. They tolerate cold well but need shade and water in heat, and a tub or pond to submerge their heads. Dry bedding prevents foot issues.

Common mistakes with Cayuga Ducks

Common errors are weak predator protection, no bathing water (eye/foot problems), and feeding bread or niacin-deficient chick starter. Nonstick-fume exposure near indoor housing is a routine hazard.
