Panther is one of the chameleons varieties people look up by name. This page answers the questions owners actually type about panther, then points you to the sourced chameleons care guidance that applies to every variety.

Look, don't handle: they change color for mood and temperature, not camouflage.

Quick answer: Panther is a variety of chameleons. Everything on this page is chameleons-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is chameleons-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Exotic & Laboratory Animals: Reptiles and RSPCA — Reptile care advice. It applies to Panther exactly as it applies to every other chameleons variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Feeding: live insects, gut-loaded

Dubia roaches, crickets, locusts, silkworms and hornworms as variety; feeders must be gut-loaded (fed good food 24 h before) or they are empty calories. Juveniles eat daily (as much as they take in minutes), adults every other day — 4–8 appropriately sized insects. Wild-caught insects carry pesticides; pet-shop crickets left unfed are nutritionally hollow. Chameleons also eat some plant matter — veileds especially nibble leaves, which is normal.

Health: the quiet decline list

Chameleons hide illness late. Watch for: eyes sunken or held shut (pain, infection, dehydration — urgent), MBD signs (rubber jaw, bent limbs — UVB/calcium failure), respiratory infection (open-mouth breathing, mucus — often from cold, damp stagnant cages), edema (protein/vitamin oversupplementation), and egg binding in females (they lay even without a male — a deep laying bin of damp soil must always be available). An exotic reptile vet is not optional; chameleons decline in days once visible symptoms show.
