🐍 Children's Python — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The gentle little Aussie python that stays under 3.5 feet and eats like a champ.

Children's pythons (Antaresia childreni) are 2.5-3.5 foot (75-105 cm) pythons from Australia, among the smallest pythons kept as pets. They are docile, hardy, and a great first python.

The honest note: they are nocturnal, need a proper heat gradient and dry-ish Australian conditions, and eat only frozen-thawed rodents. They are climbers, so a bit of height helps.

How long do Children's Pythons live?

Children's pythons live 15-25 years in captivity and reach 2.5-3.5 feet (75-105 cm), typically 200-500 grams as adults.

What do Children's Pythons eat?

They eat frozen-thawed mice (small adults for full-grown snakes, pinkies/fuzzies for juveniles). Feed juveniles every 5-7 days and adults every 7-10 days, one prey item no wider than the body. Never feed live prey; no insects, eggs or vegetation.

Children's Python enclosure setup

An adult needs a 20-30 gallon terrarium with a branch for climbing and a secure lid. Provide a warm side of 85-88°F (29-31°C), a cool side of 75-78°F (24-26°C), and a night drop to 70°F (21°C). Humidity 40-60% with a water bowl and a humid hide for sheds. UVB is optional. Include at least two hides.

Common mistakes with Children's Pythons

Typical errors: too-cold enclosure (refusal to eat), live feeding (injury), an enclosure too small for an active climber, and no humid hide (difficult sheds).
