🐟 Chili Rasbora — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

A rice-grain of red fire built for nano tanks and shrimp setups.

Chili Rasboras (Boraras brigittae) are minuscule — about 0.8 inches (2 cm) — with a deep red body and a dark stripe. They are perfect for small planted aquariums and coexist peacefully with dwarf shrimp, adding a carpet of moving red.

They are fragile in the sense that a tiny tank demands discipline: stable warm water, no spikes, and a school. Once settled they are surprisingly long-lived for their size.

How long do Chili Rasboras live?

Despite their size, Chili Rasboras can live 4-8 years with consistent, mature water and a good diet. Tiny tanks that swing are the main threat to that lifespan.

What do Chili Rasboras eat?

Feed tiny foods: crushed flake, micro-pellets, and live/frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia and microworms. Overfeeding and large food particles they cannot eat are the usual mistakes; keep portions microscopic.

Tank size and water parameters

A 5-10 gallon (19-38 L) tank can hold a school of 8-10. Target 72-79°F (22-26°C), pH 4.0-7.0, very soft water preferred, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 15 ppm. Keep in groups of 8+; they color best over moss and dark substrate.

Common mistakes with Chili Rasboras

Key errors: too few fish so they hide and pale; a new or unstable tank where small volumes spike fast; and larger tank mates that eat or outcompete them. They belong in a quiet, mature nano setup.
