🐟 Clown Goby — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The pocket goby with a clown face and a perch-and-gape attitude.

Clown Gobies (Gobiodon okinawae) are 1.5-2 inches (4-5 cm), yellow (or green) with dark 'clown' markings and a comically large mouth. They are tiny, peaceful reef fish that perch on corals and rock, and they are generally safe with corals and invertebrates.

They are a great nano-reef fish but need stable marine water and small foods. They can be kept singly or in a mated pair; groups need space.

How long do Clown Gobies live?

Clown Gobies live 3 or more years with good marine care. Stable water and small, frequent feeds support that span.

What do Clown Gobies eat?

They take tiny frozen/live foods like brine shrimp and mysis, and often pellets once settled. The mistake is only large foods they cannot catch; offer small, frequent portions.

Tank size and water parameters

A 10-gallon (38 L) reef can suit one, larger for a pair. Target 72-80°F (22-27°C), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, ammonia/nitrite zero, nitrate under ~20 ppm. Provide rock/coral perches and a tight lid (jumpers).

Common mistakes with Clown Gobies

Key errors: large foods they can't eat; an open tank (they jump); aggressive tank mates; and unstable marine parameters in a small reef.
