🐟 Clown Pleco — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The little striped wood-rasper that stays pocket-sized for life.

Clown Plecos (Panaqolus maccus) are about 3-4 inches (8-10 cm), dark with bright yellow bands, and one of the few plecos that stay truly small. They are peaceful and spend their time rasping on driftwood and grazing.

Like bristlenoses they need wood, real food, and clean water — they are not tank-cleaners. Their small size makes them a good pleco choice for modest tanks.

How long do Clown Plecos live?

Clown Plecos are long-lived, commonly 10 or more years with good care. Stable water and plenty of wood support that lifespan.

What do Clown Plecos eat?

They need driftwood to rasp, plus algae wafers, sinking pellets, and vegetables. Overfeeding and a wood-free, greens-free diet are the usual mistakes.

Tank size and water parameters

A 20-gallon (75 L) tank suits one adult. Target 73-82°F (23-28°C), pH 6.5-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-30 ppm. Provide ample driftwood and caves; keep one per tank as they mature territorial.

Common mistakes with Clown Plecos

Key errors: no driftwood (they need it to rasp and for fiber); algae-only feeding; poor water quality from their waste; and multiple adults fighting in a small tank.
