🐟 Congo Tetra — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The African showpiece tetra with rainbow-flag fins and a calm, active school.

Congo Tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus) are among the most striking tetras, reaching about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in males with long, flowing, multicolored fins that shimmer blue, red and yellow. They come from the Congo River basin and are peaceful, active mid-water schoolers.

They need a bit more room than the tiny tetras and prefer soft, slightly acidic water and a planted tank with open swimming space. Males display best in a good-sized school.

How long do Congo Tetras live?

Congo Tetras live about 3-4 years with good care. Stable warm water and a varied diet keep males' colors at their best.

What do Congo Tetras eat?

They accept flake, pellets, and frozen/live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. The mistake is overfeeding and relying on flakes alone; a varied diet supports their fin condition.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank or larger suits a school of 6-8. Target 73-81°F (23-27°C), pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderate water, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20 ppm. Keep in groups of 6+; plants plus open swimming space show them best.

Common mistakes with Congo Tetras

Common errors: too small a tank for an active 3-inch schooler; hard, alkaline water that dulls them; and fin-nipping tank mates that shred their long fins — choose gentle companions.
