Big personality, small-ish body, stadium-level volume. The clown of the parrot world.

Quick answer: Sun conure is a variety of conures. Everything on this page is conures-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is conures-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Exotic & Laboratory Animals: Pet Birds and RSPCA — Pet birds advice. It applies to Sun conure exactly as it applies to every other conures variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

How long do conures live

Most conures live 20–30 years; smaller Pyrrhura species toward 20, larger Aratinga toward 30. Longevity tracks diet and vet care. The classic errors — all-seed diet, no yearly avian check, and untreated beak or feather disease — are what cut them short.

Diet and chewing

Pellet base (60–70%), daily vegetables, some fruit, and hard chew toys (pine, manzanita) to wear the ever-growing beak. Sun conures in particular are prone to obesity on rich diets. No avocado, chocolate, caffeine, or salt. A cuttlebone and fresh water daily.
