The hardiest beginner fish — fast, frantic, and forgiving of new-keeper mistakes.
Quick answer: Leopard danio is a variety of danios. Everything on this page is danios-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.
The care below is danios-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Aquarium and Pond Fish and RSPCA — Fish care. It applies to Leopard danio exactly as it applies to every other danios variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.
Diet and breeding
Danios eat almost any flake or micro-pellet and relish frozen/live foods. Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily. They scatter eggs on plants; if you want fry, use a spawning mop and remove adults after. Overfeeding is the main water-quality risk — they are enthusiastic eaters. A varied diet keeps colors bright.
Why they are the beginner pick
Danios tolerate the mistakes new keepers make — slight parameter swings, an unsteady heater, an imperfect cycle — better than almost any other fish. They are not a substitute for learning the nitrogen cycle, but they forgive the learning curve. Start here, learn the tank, then add sensitive species later.
