🦜 Eclectus — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 2 varieties mapped

The parrot where the male and female look like two different species, and eat like frugivores.

Eclectus parrots are medium-sized, 12-14 inches (31-36 cm) long and 350-550 g, with captive lifespans of 30-50 years. They are kept for their unusually calm, gentle temperament and for their vivid sexual dimorphism: green males and red-and-blue females.

Eclectus have a unique frugivorous digestive system and are prone to a vitamin-overload syndrome (toe-tapping, wing-flipping) from excess synthetic vitamins and artificial colorings. They need a lower-fat, higher-fruit diet than most parrots, and a quiet, low-stress home suits them best.

How long do Eclectus live?

Eclectus commonly live 30-50 years in captivity, making them a lifelong commitment comparable to other medium parrots.

What do Eclectus eat?

Unlike seed-eating parrots, eclectus thrive on a diet rich in fruits and cooked vegetables (perhaps 50-60%), with a modest amount of pellets and very limited seed or nuts. Avoid avocado, chocolate, and caffeine. Watch for 'toe-tapping' and night-fright triggered by excess vitamin D3, artificial dyes, and preservatives, so use a low-additive, natural diet.

Eclectus cage and daily life

Provide a cage at least 36 x 24 x 48 inches (90 x 60 x 120 cm) with 3/4-1 inch bar spacing, plus 3-4 hours of out-of-cage time. Eclectus are sensitive to stress and poor air quality, so keep the environment calm, humidified if dry, and far from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal). Soft perches help their sensitive feet.

Common mistakes with Eclectus

The classic error is feeding a high-seed, high-fat parrot diet plus vitamin-fortified supplements, which drives obesity, toe-tapping, and feather issues. Other killers are nonstick-fume exposure, a high-stress noisy household, and treating them like a boisterous Amazon when they need a gentle, quiet routine.
