🐟 Electric Blue Acara — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The blue-glinted cichlid with a gentler temperament than its relatives.

Electric Blue Acaras (Andinoacara pulcher, the blue form of the blue acara) are 6-7 inches (15-18 cm) with a striking metallic blue shimmer. They are notably more peaceful than aggressive cichlids like jack dempseys, making them a good 'community cichlid' for larger tanks.

They still need space and can be territorial when breeding, but they generally coexist with robust mid-sized tank mates better than most cichlids.

How long do Electric Blue Acaras live?

Electric Blue Acaras live 8 or more years with good care. Stable, warm, clean water supports a long, healthy life.

What do Electric Blue Acaras eat?

They are omnivorous carnivores taking cichlid pellets, frozen/live foods, and some vegetable matter. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed measured portions once or twice daily.

Tank size and water parameters

A 40-gallon (150 L) tank suits a single or pair. Target 74-82°F (23-28°C), pH 6.5-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-40 ppm. Provide plants, rocks and open swimming space.

Common mistakes with Electric Blue Acaras

Key errors: too small a tank for a 6-7 inch fish; tiny or timid tank mates they may eat or stress; weak filtration given cichlid waste; and forgetting they get territorial when spawning.
