🐟 Endler's Livebearer — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 2 varieties mapped

The guppy's flashier, hardier little cousin that breeds in your tank.

Endler's Livebearers (Poecilia wingei) are about 1-1.75 inches (2.5-4.5 cm), smaller and even more vividly colored than fancy guppies, with neon greens, oranges and metallic spots. They are livebearers — females give birth to free-swimming fry — and they are extremely easy to keep.

They are peaceful, active, and great for small tanks, but like guppies they breed constantly, so populations grow fast. They mix well with other small, peaceful fish.

How long do Endler's Livebearers live?

Endler's Livebearers live about 2-3 years with good care. Their short lifespan is normal for small livebearers; clean warm water and a varied diet maximize it.

What do Endler's Livebearers eat?

They take flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen/live foods like baby brine shrimp and daphnia. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed small portions once or twice daily. They also graze on algae.

Tank size and water parameters

A 10-gallon (38 L) tank suits a small group. Target 72-82°F (22-28°C), pH 6.7-8.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-30 ppm. Keep more females than males; the black bar Endler is a popular strain.

Common mistakes with Endler's Livebearers

Key errors: only males (they harass each other and need females for balance); inbreeding with guppies that dilutes the line; overfeeding; and letting fry overpopulate a small tank.
