Think horizontal space first: for a pair, 75–90 cm (30–36 in) of length is a sane floor, and a walk-in or tall aviary flight is better still. Bar spacing must be tight — about 1 cm (3/8 in) — or heads get stuck. Multiple perches of natural wood at different heights, one or two sheltered corners, and a shallow bath dish two or three times a week. Avoid overcrowding: more birds means more mess, more noise and more squabbles per square centimeter.

Diet and everyday care

A balanced finch seed mix, daily greens and a hard-boiled egg or egg food during breeding and molt form the base. Grit is unnecessary; cuttlebone and fresh water daily are not. Line the tray with paper, change it every few days, and expect seed husks to fly further than you think — a seed catcher skirt or a grate that keeps birds off droppings is worth it. Never clean with aerosols or strong fumes near the cage.
