🐸 Fire-belly Toad — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The little toad that flashes a warning-red belly — charming, semi-aquatic, and cool-loving.

Fire-belly toads (Bombina orientalis, the oriental fire-belly) are 1.5-2.5 inch (4-6 cm) semi-aquatic toads from East Asia, famous for the bright red/orange belly they display when threatened. They are hardy, personable beginner amphibians.

The honest notes: they are COOL-climate animals (not tropical) and overheat easily; their skin secretes toxins, so never handle unnecessarily and always wash hands after tank work. They need a half-water, half-land setup with dechlorinated water.

How long do Fire-belly Toads live?

Fire-belly toads live 10-15 years (some to 20) and stay small at 1.5-2.5 inches (4-6 cm), weighing 10-30 grams.

What do Fire-belly Toads eat?

They are insectivores: small crickets, fruit flies, bloodworms, and tiny worms, dusted with calcium most feedings and a D3 multivitamin weekly. Feed every other day; prey must be small. No vegetation. Avoid wild-caught insects (pesticides).

Fire-belly Toad enclosure setup

Use a 10-20 gallon semi-aquatic setup (roughly half shallow, dechlorinated water with a gentle filter, half land with moss/plants). Keep it COOL: 65-75°F (18-24°C) days, nights down to 60-65°F (15-18°C). Humidity 60-80% with misting. A low UVB (5% T5 or LED) is optional. Provide easy water entry/exit and a secure lid.

Common mistakes with Fire-belly Toads

Key errors: a warm tank (they are cool-climate and overheat), dry conditions (skin problems), handling that transfers their skin toxins to eyes/cuts, and untreated tap water (chlorine harms skin).
