🐟 Firefish — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 2 varieties mapped

The darting fire-colored goby that will leap for freedom without a lid.

Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica), also called fire gobies, are about 3 inches (8 cm), with a red-orange front fading to yellow and a flowing first dorsal spine; the purple firefish (N. decora) is a closely related look-alike. They are peaceful, beautiful, and constantly on the lookout.

They are notorious jumpers, so a tight lid is non-negotiable. They are shy and appreciate a cave to retreat into, and they do well in pairs or singly in a reef.

How long do Firefish live?

Firefish live about 3-5 years with good marine care. A secure lid and stable water are what protect that lifespan — jumps are the leading loss.

What do Firefish eat?

They take small frozen/live foods like brine shrimp and mysis, and often pellets once settled. The mistake is only large foods they cannot catch; offer small, frequent feedings.

Tank size and water parameters

A 20-gallon (75 L) tank suits one, larger for a pair. Target 72-82°F (22-28°C), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, ammonia/nitrite zero, nitrate under ~20 ppm. Provide a cave and a tight-fitting lid.

Common mistakes with Firefish

Key errors: an open or loose lid (they jump out); aggressive tank mates that stress them; no cave to retreat into; and large foods they cannot eat.
