🐟 Flame Angelfish — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The flame-red dwarf angel that brings punch to a reef or fish-only tank.

Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula) are 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), a glowing red-orange with dark vertical bars and blue-tipped fins, from the central Pacific. They are popular dwarf angelfish valued for color and relatively bold personality.

They do best in a mature reef or fish-only marine tank with rockwork. A key honesty note: dwarf angels may nip corals and clam mantles, so they are 'reef-safe with caution,' not guaranteed safe for delicate corals.

Flame Angelfish

How long do Flame Angelfish live?

Flame Angelfish live about 5-7 years with good marine care. Stable water, rock cover and a varied diet support that span.

What do Flame Angelfish eat?

They are omnivores needing marine algae, spirulina, quality angel formulas and some meaty foods. The mistake is a single-food diet; offer greens and proteins to prevent color loss and wasting.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank suits one (larger for a pair). Target 72-82°F (22-28°C), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, ammonia/nitrite zero, nitrate under ~20 ppm. Provide live rock for grazing and hiding.

Common mistakes with Flame Angelfish

Key errors: assuming they are fully reef-safe (they may nip corals/clams); too-small tank with no rock; two in a small tank (fight); and poor marine water quality.
