🦎 Frilled Dragon — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Reptiles & amphibians · 1 varieties mapped

The frill-necked showman of the Aussie outback — dramatic defense display, demanding husbandry.

Frilled dragons (Chlamydosaurus kingii) are 2-3 foot (60-90 cm) arboreal agamids from Australia and New Guinea, famous for erecting a spectacular neck frill when threatened. They are impressive, active display lizards with real personality.

The honest requirement: they need a tall enclosure, high heat and strong UVB, moderate humidity, and a mostly insect diet with some greens. They are fast, skittish, and not cuddly — a showcase animal for a committed keeper.

How long do Frilled Dragons live?

Frilled dragons live 10-15 years in captivity and reach 2-3 feet (60-90 cm), mostly tail, with adult weights around 300-600 grams.

What do Frilled Dragons eat?

They are primarily insectivorous with some plant matter: crickets, roaches, locusts, and occasional silkworms, plus a little leafy green and fruit. Feed juveniles daily and adults every other day, dusting prey with calcium and a D3 multivitamin 1-2 times weekly. Avoid wild-caught insects and do not overfeed fruit.

Frilled Dragon enclosure setup

Adults need a tall enclosure roughly 4x2x4-6 feet (120x60x120-180 cm) with branches for climbing and a substrate that holds some moisture. Maintain 90-100°F (32-38°C) basking, ambient 80-90°F (27-32°C), and a cool end near 75°F (24°C); nights drop to 70°F (21°C). Humidity 50-70% with misting. Strong UVB (10-12% T5) is essential.

Common mistakes with Frilled Dragons

Typical errors: a cage too short for a tree-dwelling 3-footer, basking heat and UVB too low (MBD, lethargy), humidity crashing (shed problems), and handling that stresses these flighty lizards.
