The care below is garter snakes-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Reptiles and RSPCA — Reptiles and amphibians. Heat and light
Basking 85–90°F (29–32°C), cool side 70–75°F (21–24°C), with UVB beneficial though not strictly required. A daylight cycle helps their activity. Avoid overheating — a thermal gradient lets them regulate. Fresh water daily is critical.
Diet: the odd menu
Garters eat earthworms, fish (tilapia, guppies), and amended slugs; captive diets use thawed silverside fish and earthworms, with occasional pinkies for some. Most refuse mice. Feed juveniles every 2–3 days, adults weekly. Variety prevents deficiency. Some produce a mild musk when handled — wash hands after.
