🐟 Giant Danio — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The danio that outgrows the starter tank — fast, silver, and full of energy.

Giant Danios (Devario aequipinnatus) are the big siblings of the zebra, reaching 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) with a blue-and-yellow striped body. They are hardy, very active open-water swimmers that need space and a school to look their best.

They are too large and boisterous for small community tanks and will outcompete or bowl over tiny fish. A longer, larger aquarium is the right home.

How long do Giant Danios live?

Giant Danios live about 5-7 years with good care. Their robust nature makes them a long-lived, active centerpiece schooler.

What do Giant Danios eat?

They are omnivores taking flake, pellets, and frozen/live foods like bloodworms and daphnia. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed what is finished in two to three minutes.

Tank size and water parameters

A 40-gallon (150 L) tank or larger suits a school of 6. Target 72-80°F (22-27°C), pH 6.5-7.5, moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 30 ppm. Keep in groups of 6+; a long tank with a secure lid (they jump) is ideal.

Common mistakes with Giant Danios

Key errors: too small a tank for a 4-6 inch active swimmer; too small a group; and housing with small or slow tank mates they outcompete and bowl over.
