🐟 Glass Catfish — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The see-through catfish that only truly shines in a tight, confident school.

Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus, formerly K. bicirrhis) are about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), almost fully transparent with visible bones and a forked tail. They are peaceful, schooling fish that look ghostly and beautiful in a planted tank — but only when kept in a proper group.

They are timid and easily stressed alone or with boisterous tank mates. A calm community and a school of 5+ bring out their best behavior.

How long do Glass Catfish live?

Glass Catfish live about 7-8 years with good care. Stable, mature, peaceful water is what carries them that far.

What do Glass Catfish eat?

They take small sinking pellets, flakes, and live/frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp. Overfeeding and large food they cannot swallow are the usual mistakes; they have small mouths.

Tank size and water parameters

A 30-gallon (115 L) tank suits a school of 5-6. Target 75-82°F (24-28°C), pH 6.5-7.0, soft to moderate water, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20 ppm. Keep in groups of 5+ with plants and gentle flow; a secure lid helps as they are jump-prone.

Common mistakes with Glass Catfish

Key errors: too small a group (they cower and fade alone); boisterous or aggressive tank mates; unstable water in a tank they are sensitive to; and large food they cannot eat.
