🐔 Golden Pheasant — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The male is a walking fireworks display of gold, red, and blue, best seen strutting in an aviary.

Golden pheasants are small pheasants about 35-41 inches (90-105 cm) long including a very long tail, weighing 1-1.5 lb (0.5-0.7 kg), living 5-8 years in captivity. They are kept as ornamental aviary birds for the male's spectacular plumage.

They are shy, flighty, and not handleable; they need a secure, planted aviary with cover. Males display elaborately in spring. They suit aviary keepers rather than pet owners.

How long do Golden Pheasants live?

Golden pheasants commonly live 5-8 years in captivity with good care.

What do Golden Pheasants eat?

Feed a gamebird/pheasant pellet or crumble (around 16-18% protein) with greens, seeds, fruit, and live insects; avoid avocado and chocolate. During breeding, add protein. Offer grit and fresh water daily; scattered food encourages foraging.

Golden Pheasant housing and daily life

Keep a pair or small group in a planted aviary with dense cover and perches, allowing several square meters per bird plus flight room. Provide a sheltered roost and a dust bath. They are hardy but need dry, predator-proof housing and protection from foxes and hawks.

Common mistakes with Golden Pheasants

Common errors are overstocking males (they fight), too little cover (stressed, feather-barred birds), and damp housing (parasites, respiratory issues). Nonstick-fume exposure and feeding toxic foods are acute risks.
