herd animals that need vitamin C from food, space far beyond the starter cage, and a companion of their own kind.

Quick answer: Silkie is a variety of guinea pigs. Everything on this page is guinea pigs-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is guinea pigs-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Guinea Pigs and House Rabbit Society / RSPCA — Guinea pig care. It applies to Silkie exactly as it applies to every other guinea pigs variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Lifespan and health

5–8 years, longer than most people expect. Common issues: respiratory infections (a snuffling pig is a vet visit, not a wait-and-see), bladder stones, dental overgrowth from insufficient hay, and flystrike in outdoor animals.

Handling and kids

Ground-level laps and floor pens work best; support the whole body. They're one of the best small pets for gentle older children precisely because they communicate clearly and rarely bite.
