Solitary, nocturnal, and escape artists. Syrian vs dwarf care differs more than the pet-store shelf suggests.

Quick answer: Roborovski dwarf is a variety of hamsters. Everything on this page is hamsters-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is hamsters-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Exotic & Laboratory Animals: Rodents and RSPCA — Hamster care. It applies to Roborovski dwarf exactly as it applies to every other hamsters variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Lifespan and health

Expect roughly 2–3 years. The classic emergency is "wet tail" (proliferative ileitis) — diarrhea plus a wet, soiled rear is a same-day vet emergency. Overgrown nails, dental issues, and scent-gland tumors in older dwarfs are the other frequent vet stops.

Handling

Scoop from below rather than grabbing from above, and wake a hamster gently — a startled bite is usually startle, not temperament. Evening handling sessions match their natural activity peak.
