The tank: humidity, heat and deep sand

A glass tank (38–75 liters for a small group) with a sealed lid holds the 70–80% humidity their gills require — mesh lids leak it away. Temperature 24–28°C via a heat mat on the side (not under deep substrate). Substrate: a 15–20 cm deep mix of play sand and coconut fiber, packed damp enough to hold a tunnel — crabs bury themselves to molt monthly and need the depth. Provide climbing branches, hides, and a pool or two for fun.

Water: two dishes, both dechlorinated

Every crab tank needs two water sources: fresh dechlorinated water and marine salt water (mixed to proper specific gravity with an aquarium salt product — never table salt), in dishes deep enough to submerge but with an easy exit (ramp or stone) so a small crab does not drown. Chlorine and chloramine harm gills; dechlorinate both waters. Mist the tank with dechlorinated water to hold humidity.
