🦚 Indian Peafowl — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The bird with the world's most famous tail, and a scream to match it.

Indian peafowl are large pheasants, males 35-50 inches (90-130 cm) long including a train that can reach 5-6 ft (1.5-2 m), weighing 9-13 lb (4-6 kg), living 10-25 years (up to 30) in captivity. They are kept as ornamental birds on estates, farms, and preserves.

They are not handleable pets and are very vocal, especially in breeding season. They need large, secure, predator-proof grounds with shelter; this is an avicultural/ornamental species, not a companion bird.

How long do Indian Peafowl live?

Indian peafowl commonly live 10-25 years in captivity, occasionally up to 30 with excellent care.

What do Indian Peafowl eat?

Feed a gamebird/poultry pellet or crumble (16-20% protein) with greens, grain, fruit, and insects; avoid avocado and chocolate. Free-ranging helps them forage. Provide grit and fresh water daily; during breeding add protein and calcium.

Indian Peafowl housing and daily life

They need a large, fenced yard or aviary with tall perches for roosting (they fly and roost up high), shelter from weather, and strong predator protection (foxes, dogs, hawks). The train needs space to display; protect from mud and parasites with dry bedding and dust baths.

Common mistakes with Indian Peafowl

Common errors are keeping them in small urban yards where the loud call and mess anger neighbors, weak predator protection, and damp housing (parasites, foot problems). Nonstick-fume exposure near indoor housing and toxic foods are acute risks.
