🐦 Java Sparrow — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The chunky, gregarious finch with a clownish red beak and a taste for flock life.

Java sparrows are large estrildid finches about 5-6 inches (13-15 cm) long and 20-30 g, living 5-10 years in captivity. They are kept for their bold looks and friendly flock behavior.

Note they are illegal or restricted in some U.S. states (e.g., California) as a potential agricultural pest, so check local law. They must be kept in pairs or flocks and are not hand-tamed.

How long do Java Sparrows live?

Java sparrows typically live 5-10 years in captivity with good care.

What do Java Sparrows eat?

Feed a quality finch/grass seed mix with daily greens, a little egg food, and cuttlebone; avoid avocado and chocolate. Fresh water daily. They are robust but benefit from greens and calcium, especially when breeding.

Java Sparrow cage and daily life

Keep a pair or flock in a flight cage at least 24 x 18 x 24 inches (60 x 45 x 60 cm), bar spacing 3/8-1/2 inch, with perches, a shallow bath, and company. They need room to fly and dislike isolation. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are lethal).

Common mistakes with Java Sparrows

Common errors are keeping one bird alone, too-wide or too-narrow bar spacing, and seed-only diets without greens. Nonstick-fume exposure and owning them where banned (confiscation risk) are other issues.
