How long do king snakes live
King and milk snakes live 15–20 years. Very hardy, but the risks are regurgitation from handling too soon after feeding, respiratory infection from damp cold, and scale issues from dirty substrate. A dry, warm, clean setup carries them for two decades.
Enclosure and solo rule
A 20–40 gal (75–150 L) enclosure suits an adult. Aspen or cypress substrate, two hides, a water bowl, and a secure lid. Critical: house only one king snake per enclosure — they are cannibalistic and will eat cage mates. Provide a thermal gradient and a hide on each end.
Heat and light
Basking 85–90°F (29–32°C), cool side 72–78°F (22–26°C), low humidity (30–50%). UVB optional. A clear day-night cycle supports natural behavior. Avoid overheating; a gradient is essential. Fresh water and a clean bowl prevent bacterial buildup.
Diet and the feeding bite
Feed thawed mice: juveniles every 5–7 days, adults every 10–14 days. King snakes are enthusiastic feeders and may strike hands — use a hook or tongs and avoid handling for 48 hours post-feed (prevents regurgitation). Never feed live prey. Their confidence is charming but demandsrespect at mealtimes.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Cohabiting two king snakes — they eat each other.
- Handling right after feeding — regurgitation.
- Bare hands at feeding — they strike food-aggressively.
- Damp, cold setup — respiratory infection.
