🐟 Kribensis — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The beginner-friendly dwarf cichlid that even breeds in a community tank.

Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) are 3-4 inches (8-10 cm), colorful West African cichlids with a purple-tinged body and a red belly in females. They are among the easier, more peaceful cichlids and are famous for breeding readily — even in a community setup.

They are more tolerant than rams but still become territorial when guarding eggs. A planted tank with caves suits them, and they accept a wide range of conditions.

How long do Kribensis live?

Kribensis live 5 or more years with good care. Their adaptability makes them a dependable, long-term dwarf cichlid.

What do Kribensis eat?

They are omnivores taking pellets, flake, and frozen/live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, plus some vegetable matter. Overfeeding is the main diet error; feed measured portions.

Tank size and water parameters

A 20-gallon (75 L) tank suits a pair. Target 75-79°F (24-26°C), pH 5.0-8.0 (very adaptable), moderate hardness, zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate under 20-30 ppm. Provide caves for spawning; they defend a territory when breeding.

Common mistakes with Kribensis

Key errors: too-small tank for a breeding pair's territory; tank mates that harass them during spawning; and poor water quality that dulls their color and health.
