🦜 Lineolated Parakeet — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The quiet parakeet that sits still and watches, a calm alternative to a budgie's buzz.

Lineolated (Linnie) parakeets are small parakeets about 6-7 inches (15-18 cm) long and 45-60 g, living 10-15 years (sometimes 20) in captivity. They are kept for their unusually calm, quiet temperament and gentle handling.

They are more sedentary than most parakeets and enjoy climbing and chewing; they are good for owners who want a small parrot without constant noise. They still need a 10-20 year plan.

How long do Lineolated Parakeets live?

Lineolated parakeets commonly live 10-15 years, occasionally up to 20 in captivity with good care.

What do Lineolated Parakeets eat?

Feed about 60-70% pellets with vegetables, a little fruit, and a modest amount of seed as treats; avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Keep fatty seeds under 10% of intake to prevent obesity.

Lineolated Parakeet cage and daily life

Provide a cage at least 24 x 18 x 24 inches (60 x 45 x 60 cm) with 1/2 inch bar spacing, plus 2-3 hours out of the cage and chew toys. They are less flight-crazy than budgies but still need climbing room. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal).

Common mistakes with Lineolated Parakeets

Common errors are seed-heavy diets causing fatty liver, nonstick-fume or toxic-food exposure, and assuming they need no enrichment because they are calm (they still chew and forage). Underestimating the 10-20 year commitment leads to rehoming.
