🦜 Lorikeet — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 2 varieties mapped

A liquid-dropping, sugar-fueled rainbow that is pure chaos in the best way.

Lorikeets are small-to-medium parrots, 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) long and 75-160 g depending on species, living 10-20 years (sometimes 25+) in captivity. They are kept for their dazzling plumage, playful nature, and ability to mimic.

Lorikeets have a specialized brush tongue for nectar and do NOT eat seed; their diet is fruit, nectar, and pollen powder. Their droppings are loose and frequent, so they are messy and need frequent cage cleaning. They are high-maintenance and not a low-effort first bird.

How long do Lorikeets live?

Lorikeets commonly live 10-20 years in captivity, occasionally up to 25 with excellent care.

What do Lorikeets eat?

Feed a commercial lorikeet nectar/pollen mix or wet nectar formula plus plenty of ripe fruit (papaya, apple, grape, melon) and some vegetables. They do not eat seed. Avoid avocado, chocolate, and caffeine. Because their diet is sugary, clean food and water dishes several times daily to prevent bacterial and fungal growth.

Lorikeet cage and daily life

Provide a cage at least 36 x 24 x 36 inches (90 x 60 x 90 cm) with 5/8-3/4 inch bar spacing, plus 2-3 hours out of the cage. Lorikeets are acrobatic and love swings and showers; misting daily suits them. Expect frequent, loose droppings, so line trays with paper and change often. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal).

Common mistakes with Lorikeets

The classic error is feeding seed instead of nectar/fruit, which starves their specialized gut. Skipping frequent dish cleaning leads to sour crop and deadly bacterial infections. Nonstick-fume exposure and toxic foods are acute killers, and owners often underestimate the constant mess.
