Fischer's is one of the lovebirds varieties people look up by name. This page answers the questions owners actually type about fischer's, then points you to the sourced lovebirds care guidance that applies to every variety.

Tiny, fierce, and famously bonded — but "love" cuts both ways: they bite hard and pair for life.

Quick answer: Fischer's is a variety of lovebirds. Everything on this page is lovebirds-level guidance — we do not invent variety-specific numbers.

The care below is lovebirds-level guidance from our species hub, sourced to Merck Veterinary Manual — Exotic & Laboratory Animals: Pet Birds and RSPCA — Pet birds advice. It applies to Fischer's exactly as it applies to every other lovebirds variety. We do not publish variety-specific temperament, lifespan or weight numbers that we cannot source.

Cage and the biting truth

Minimum ~24×16×16 in (60×40×40 cm) per pair, bar spacing ½ in (1.3 cm). They chew everything — wood perches, toys, and your furniture — so provide shreddable toys or they destroy the cage. The bite is disproportionately painful; respect the beak, approach slowly, and never grab from above (that is how predators strike).

One or a pair — and the gender trap

A solo hand-raised lovebird can be a cuddly companion but needs you daily. A pair bonds to each other and may become hand-shy. Two females may fight; a male-female pair will breed non-stop and lay eggs that drain the hen. If you want a pet, not a breeding project, choose one or a same-sex pair and skip the nest box entirely.
