🐟 Mandarin Dragonet — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Fish & aquatic · 1 varieties mapped

The living painting of the reef — gorgeous, but a copepod-only gourmet.

Mandarin Dragonets (Synchiropus splendidus) are about 3 inches (8 cm), psychedelic mosaics of blue, orange and green, and among the most beautiful marine fish. The hard truth: they are specialist feeders that eat live copepods and amphipods almost exclusively, and most starve in ordinary tanks.

They belong in mature, established reef tanks with a thriving live-food population (ideally a refugium), or with an owner committed to culturing live food. This is an expert-level species, not a beginner fish.

How long do Mandarin Dragonets live?

Mandarin Dragonets can live 10 or more years in the right system — but many die within months in tanks without enough live food. A mature, pod-rich reef is the key.

What do Mandarin Dragonets eat?

They eat live copepods and amphipods almost exclusively; some individuals learn frozen foods, but most will not. The deadly mistake is assuming they'll take flake or pellets — they starve slowly; ensure a steady live-food supply or a refugium.

Tank size and water parameters

A 50-gallon (190 L) mature reef with a refugium suits one. Target 72-80°F (22-27°C), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, ammonia/nitrite zero, nitrate low. Provide live rock and a deep sand bed hosting pods; keep one per tank (they fight).

Common mistakes with Mandarin Dragonets

Deadliest errors: putting them in a new or pod-poor tank (they starve); expecting them to eat prepared foods; multiple dragonets competing for food; and buying before the tank can support live prey.
