🦜 Meyer's Parrot — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The compact, no-drama African parrot that gets along without the screaming.

Meyer's parrots are small African parrots about 8-9 inches (20-23 cm) long and 100-140 g, living 25-35 years (sometimes 50) in captivity. They are kept for their calm, gentle nature and comparatively low noise.

They are less demanding than Amazons or greys but still need enrichment, socialization, and a 25-50 year commitment. Good for owners wanting a small, manageable parrot.

How long do Meyer's Parrots live?

Meyer's parrots commonly live 25-35 years, with some individuals reaching 50 in captivity.

What do Meyer's Parrots eat?

Feed about 60-70% pellets with vegetables, a little fruit, and limited nuts/seeds as treats; avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Keep fatty foods under 10% of intake to prevent obesity.

Meyer's Parrot cage and daily life

Provide a cage at least 24 x 24 x 36 inches (60 x 60 x 90 cm) with 5/8-3/4 inch bar spacing, plus 2-3 hours out of the cage and chew toys. They are sturdy and moderate-energy; keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal).

Common mistakes with Meyer's Parrots

Common errors are seed-heavy diets causing fatty liver, nonstick-fume or toxic-food exposure, and underestimating the 25-50 year commitment. Assuming their calmness means they need no enrichment leads to boredom.
