🦜 Monk Parakeet — Guide & Varieties

IN PRODUCTION   Birds · 1 varieties mapped

The feisty little green parrot that builds a condo of sticks and talks like a champ.

Monk parakeets (Quakers) are small parrots about 11-12 inches (28-30 cm) long and 90-120 g, living 20-30 years in captivity. They are kept for their big personalities, clear speech, and relative hardiness.

Note that Quakers are illegal or restricted in several U.S. states and some countries because feral populations are agricultural pests, so check local law before buying. They are social, can be nippy, and build large stick nests even in captivity.

How long do Monk Parakeets live?

Monk parakeets commonly live 20-30 years in captivity with good care.

What do Monk Parakeets eat?

Feed about 60-70% pellets with vegetables, a little fruit, and a small amount of seed and nuts as treats. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Limit fatty seeds to under 10% of intake to prevent obesity.

Monk Parakeet cage and daily life

A single bird needs a cage around 24 x 24 x 36 inches (60 x 60 x 90 cm) with 5/8-3/4 inch bar spacing, plus 2-3 hours of out-of-cage time and chew toys (they love to shred). Provide nest-box or palm-fiber material if you want to satisfy their nesting drive. Keep away from kitchens (Teflon/PTFE fumes are fatal).

Common mistakes with Monk Parakeets

Biggest mistakes are buying one where they are illegal (risk of confiscation), feeding seed-heavy diets causing fatty liver, and underestimating the 20-30 year commitment. They are also prone to becoming one-person birds and nipping, so early socialization with multiple people helps.
